Getting road ready is all about building your confidence, one step at a time. Your first step might be running errands by bike from now on, or cycling to the train station rather than driving. Remember, it’s OK to get off and walk your bike if you’re not feeling confident.

Riding confidently means:

  • Communicating with other road users. The best form of communication is eye contact.
  • Being aware of others’ blind spots. Try not to remain in them.
  • See, be seen and communicate. Ride where you can see other users and where others can see you.
  • Being predictable with your movements
  • Being patient. One of the great things about riding a bike is skipping traffic, but know when to wait in line with other road users.

The more you ride, the more you’ll notice the benefits. No more hunting for parking spots, or paying for them. There are some nifty designated spots around Wellington, but you can park your bike anywhere with a good lock. Check out how to best secure your bike.

Need some guidance to get out on the road? Try a Pedal Ready course. The course will walk you through the skills you’ll need to navigate the streets. Get a workmate involved and an instructor will come to your workplace free of charge.
